Public Hunting Maps and Recreation maps

Scroll down for map links sorted by state.

New October 2016. These map links are now working again. Also, be sure to take a look at the Gmap4 map links that display layers of data hosted on government GIS servers. Those map links are at https://propertylinemaps.com/p/public-land-map.html

Each link on this page will display an interactive map showing a KML or KMZ data file that was made by a government agency. Many of these maps show areas where public hunting is allowed. You can flip the map between topographic and aerial views. Some of these maps show boundaries of wildlife management areas. Some maps show "Walk In Access" areas which are privately owned land where public hunting is allowed. Some of the data files are quite large so if part of the map data seems to be missing then please reload that map page and all the data should appear.

Keep in mind that the boundaries may be approximate and there might be errors in the data. Remember to bring along your common sense when you go out into the field. Respect private property rights and treat landowners as you would want them to treat you.

The maps are displayed by Gmap4 which is an enhanced Google map viewer that is free for non-commercial use. To see the data file on high resolution topographic maps click/touch the button in the upper right corner of the map and select "t4 Topo High". The Gmap4 homepage has a FAQ, lots of examples and a PDF Help file that includes a Quick Start section. Features in Gmap4 let you Search, display several file formats, prepare a link that will display the map you see on your screen and a lot more. If there is cell phone service at any of these public hunting areas then you can display these maps with the browser in your smartphone and use the Menu ==> 'My Location' feature to see your location on the map.

Help Me Help You

Don't see your state listed below? Consider searching your state's website for "Google Earth" files. These will either be KML or KMZ files and most of them can be displayed by Gmap4. If you do not find anything like this for your state then you might send them an email and suggest that they join with the other states that have posted "Google Earth" files online and which show public hunting areas. Of course if you do find some KML or KMZ files for your state please send me an e-mail so I can consider producing maps to display those data files. Also, please let me know if you find any dead links here.

Important tips if you are making KML and/or KMZ files

The link below is a good example of a map that shows the boundaries for wildlife management areas (WMA). This map has the following good features:
1. If you click on a boundary line then you get a popup that has a link to detailed information for that area.
2. Parking locations are shown.
3. The managed area does *not* have any solid fill (which makes it impossible to see the topo map or aerial).
These same useability recommendations apply to any online map that shows any kind of managed area.

Also, Google has imposed limits on the size of KML/KMZ files that can be displayed by software that uses the Google map API.
1. A KML file must be under 3MB
2. A KMZ file must be under 3MB and the uncompressed KML must be under 10MB

Fortunately it is easy to display data that exceeds these limits. First, break the data down into smaller files that are below these limits. Second, make a small KML file that includes NetworkLink tags that point to your data files. Gmap4, Google Earth and other software can be told to display the small KML file and all of your data will appear on the map.

To see an example of such a small KML file, download this file and open it in your editor:
